This research presents a critical and analytical study of Shaikh Ayaz’s character poems, highlighting his distinctive contribution to Sindhi literature. Shaikh Ayaz (1923–1997) is a remarkable poet whose art embodies poetic beauty, philosophical thought, and humor in complete harmony. Among his many literary qualities, the creation of character poems occupies a prominent place. After Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, Ayaz revitalized Sindhi poetry by introducing powerful characterization through diverse poetic figures.
Characterization, as an artistic form, expresses a character’s emotions, attitudes, and psychological states in a natural and realistic manner. In a character poem, the poet creatively presents a character — whether drawn from history, society, or imagination — with complete artistic freedom. The essential elements of such poetry include the psychology of temperament, ideological depth, and a vivid creative passion that enhances the poem’s thematic significance.
Ayaz’s poetic subjects are deeply rooted in his social surroundings, reflecting the living pulse of human experience. Characters appear across all his poetic genres, including ghazal, bait, wa’i, geet, haiku, triolet, nazm, azad nazm, and prose poem. His character poems stand as profound examples of both artistic creativity and ideological expression in Sindhi poetry.
