Abstract:
Sachal Sarmast (1739-1827) is a poet associated, at best, with the Wahdat-ul-Wajud (Unity of Being) Sufi tradition. His poetry creatively spells out the mysteries and secrets of the Tasawwuf (Sufism) tradition. He has been the poet on the path of truth, beauty, righteousness, and ishq, and his poetry contains enormous virtues and truthfulness. When we pay philosophical attention to the poetry of Sachal Sarmast, it clearly illustrates the characteristics of newness, passion, and transcendence. This research paper attempts to focus on Sachal Sarmast’s poetry, which embraces a distinct and diverse quality and has expressions of bold and audacious thoughts. This paper will highlight that the thoughtful poetry of Sachal Sarmast contains in abundance the quality of the spirit of drunkenness in the Sufi lexicon of higher consciousness. In this paper, I discuss that, on the lines of the tradition of classical poets, Sachal reveals the strong prowess of artistic, deep thought, and aesthetics. His poetry contains the beauty of poetic language and thought. This paper highlights these characteristics in the poetry of Sachal Sarmast.
