An idiom is a combination of two or more words whose apparent and inner meanings differ. The use of idioms in any sentence enhances its expression, beauty, and impact, allowing deep meanings to be conveyed through concise words. Idioms are considered the ornament and charm of a language, therefore they are not only used in everyday speech but also widely employed in literary works, both poetry and prose.
This study explores the use of idioms in the poetry of Shaikh Ayaz, a prominent and influential Sindhi poet. The research aims to identify which idioms Ayaz has used, how he has used them, and whether he has merely borrowed common idioms from the Sindhi language or created new ones through his poetic imagination. The analysis shows that Ayaz, being a master of the Sindhi language, did not limit himself to existing idioms but also coined many original expressions, metaphors, and combinations. His creative adaptation and innovation of idioms have enriched both the aesthetic and expressive dimensions of Sindhi poetry.
Through his poetic collections Bhounar Bhiri Akaas, Kulhi Patum Keenaro, Ke Jo Beejal Boliyo, and Wijjoon Wasann Aayun. Ayaz has preserved and expanded the idiomatic beauty of Sindhi, ensuring its vitality and growth within literary expression.
This research paper presents a detailed study of the idioms found in the first four poetic collections of Shaikh Ayaz.
