Abstract

Madad Ali Sindhi, born on October 12, 1952, in Hyderabad the historic city of Sindh, stands out as one of the most renowned short story writers of Sindhi language and literature. In addition to his involvement in politics and journalism, he is primarily recognized for his contribution to the world of short stories. He has authored two collections of short stories in addition to two volumes of poetry and essays. His travelogues have also drawn the attention of readers. This paper introduces Madad Ali Sindhi as a prominent and pioneering figure in the realm of Sindhi short story writing. This paper highlights that by employing the styles of modernism and existentialism his narratives often incorporate the modern technique of stream of consciousness. His stories feature characters deeply connected to the past and reflect his profound awareness of the historical richness within his soul. Notably, in his short stories, he opts for the techniques and formats of modernism and comes out of conventional short story traditions. In this paper, I demonstrate that the central theme in Madad Ali`s short story writing is existentialism. His characters grapple with the pursuit of a meaningful life and navigate existence under the shadow of impending death. Ensnared in customs that lead to illusion, the characters of his stories yearn for liberation, finding suicide as the inevitable path. Overall, this paper focuses on technique, themes and characters and literary contributions of Madad Ali Sindhi in the literary genre of short stories.
