Linguistic change in the Sindhi language is a natural and continuous process that reflects its evolution as a living and dynamic system. This study explores the major internal and external factors responsible for linguistic variation in Sindhi, including phonological, lexical, grammatical, social, historical, cultural, and technological influences. Internal mechanisms such as the principle of least effort, analogy, and phonetic simplification contribute to gradual structural modifications within the language. External forces, including political dominance, migration, geographical separation, and social transformation, play a decisive role in shaping vocabulary, syntax, and usage patterns.
Historical phases, particularly the Islamic and British colonial periods, significantly impacted Sindhi by introducing Arabic, Persian, and English lexical items, as well as influencing its script and institutional vocabulary. In the modern era, globalization, digitalization, media expansion, and technological innovation have further accelerated linguistic change through borrowing, code-mixing, and the emergence of new lexical items. Social factors such as education, gender roles, occupational shifts, and generational differences also contribute to language variation and standardization processes.
The study concludes that linguistic change should not be viewed as degradation but as a natural evolution that ensures adaptability and survival. While these changes enrich the Sindhi lexicon and expand expressive capacity, they also highlight the need to preserve its core linguistic identity and classical vocabulary for future generations.
