"Sindhi Adab Jo Mukhtasir Jaizo": A critical analysis of Akbar Laghari’s book on Literary History
Abstract
Abstract
"Sindhi Adab Jo Mukhtasir Jaizo" (A Brief Analysis of Sindhi Literature) is a foundational work by Akbar Laghari that holds significant importance in Sindhi literature, particularly as a resource for competitive examinations. This book provides a comprehensive overview of Sindhi literature along with its historical context. To enhance its appeal, the author has divided the book into various sections, including an introduction to "Literature" and the different eras of various dynasties, such as the Soomras, Samas, Arghoons-Turkhans, Mughals, Kalhoras, Talpurs, and the British. Additionally, Laghari incorporates Sindhi folk love stories, including tales like Dulha-Darya Khan, Sasui-Punhoo, Umar-Marvi, and Suhni-Mehar, among others. He also discusses notable poets from these eras. Laghari demonstrates a keen interest in Sindhi literature by highlighting both modern and classical poets, writers, and researchers, complete with their birth and death dates. This research paper offers a critical analysis of Laghari’s book, underscoring its significant role in Sindhi literature. It aims to point out the need for necessary corrections and improvements. For instance, the story of Dulha-Darya Khan is referred to as a "love" story, which requires revision. Additionally, there are inaccuracies in the text concerning important figures: the death year of Sachal Sarmast is incorrectly stated as 1842, while his grandfather is mentioned as "Mian Saleh." Furthermore, Hamal Faqeer's birth year is listed as 1878, and his death year is inaccurately given as 1810. In the section discussing the British era, the author primarily focuses on the genres of prose without sufficient depth. Finally, Laghari addresses only three poets and writers from the modern period: Shaikh Ayaz, Tanveer Abbasi, and Ustad Bukhari. This paper highlights these discrepancies, which create confusion for readers, and advocates for constructive criticism as essential for enhancing the quality of educational materials. It emphasizes the importance of identifying errors in educational publications to ensure the creation of high-quality work.
