Reflections and Feelings of Tasawwuf in the Poetry of Shaikh Ayaz
Abstract
Sindh has long been recognized as a land of Sufism, celebrated for its civilizational, social, and cultural heritage. The region is associated with Sufi teachings that promote love, peace, freedom, and human equality. Sindh embodies a tradition that embraces love and equality, transcending distinctions of color, caste, and creed. Consequently, it has earned the title of the land of Sufis, mystics, and sages. This research paper explores the narrative of Sindh as a land of Sufism through the poetry of Shaikh Ayaz, a modern poet of the 20th century and a key figure in the Sindhi language. It highlights that Shaikh Ayaz not only draws inspiration from the Sufi traditions of his predecessors—such as Shah Kareem, Meyoon Shah Inayat, Shah Latif, and Sachal Sarmast—but also adds his own modern and original insights as a naturalist, aesthete, and sensitive creative artist. His poetry encompasses themes of earth and humanity, viewing man as the essence of love and devotion. For him, the concept of 'Majaaz' (the love of humans) is essential to his poetic creativity. Ayaz believes that 'Majaaz' is not only a pathway to reach 'Haqeeqat' (the Reality) but also a destination in its own right. In this respect, the paper delves into the Sufi thoughts and mystic secrets reflected in the poetry of Shaikh Ayaz.
