Abstract

Meter is the basic element of poetry which lends musicality and rhythm to a poem. A variety of ‘Chhand’ meaning meter can be found in classical poetry. It is because of lack of awareness about and incapacity in the use of ‘Chhand’ Sindhi Classical poetry was called as improper. Only the poetry written abiding by the rules of prosody was called as proper. Chhand emerged in Sindhi Classical poetry from the time of Qazi Qadan. The successors of Qazi Qadan maintained this artistic tradition and subsequently the tradition of versification in accordance with ‘Chhand’ attained its maturity. In other words, Sindhi Classical poetry has been metrically/ versified in compliance with ‘Chhand’ and it is not in the least improper or non-metrical. Intellectually, the compassion for the oppressed and underprivileged finds its better expression in Sindhi Classical poetry.
